Watch Week

As Yakki ponders over a Tag and a Baume, I would like to recommend a more affordable brand to those of you who are considering a little foray into the world of watches.

Introducing to you, NIXON.

After my return into the world of watches with the G-Shock G-6900A, my wrist was itching for another watch.

It's like an addiction.
Some say it's kinda 'ah lian'

We stumbled upon Nixon watches on a travel magazine. Nixon began with a small line of custom built, team designed watches with focused distribution in specialty surf, skate, snow, and fashion stores. This explains it's casual and funky feel.

Anyway, we headed down to the nearest Tangs to check them out. I saw The Sentry and bought only version they had.

The gun metal one below is out-of-stock even in the States. Tough luck.

Anyhow, there's a few decent Nixon watches around and they range from S$100+ to maybe S$400+.

The other one I quite like is The Outsider.
Alienish?
If not, probably will get a G-Shock Mudman or the new Billabong ST2.

Yeah I know, nothing like the Panerais and Chopards. But these will do just fine. It's all about the time, isn't it?

Hong Kong - For the Love of Pork Chop Buns

兰芳园
Morning after our arrival in Hong Kong, XLB brought us to the 中环 (Central) area for brunch.
Spot the Alan Tams
We had previously not heard of terms such as 猪扒包 and 心多多捞丁.
PORK CHOP BUNS!
But upon being served by the efficient waiters at 兰芳园, all was clear, crusty, tasty, slurpy and savoury.
猪扒包
Located along 中环结志街, 兰芳园's 猪扒包 is amongst the top ten in Hong Kong according to XLB. The 心多多捞丁 was less brilliant, but better than any of the imitations we've tasted in Singapore.

We finally understood why our fellow citizens love this similar albeit messier city.

The food's simply simple and irresistible.

Sparkling Water Challenge - Perrier v Oldenlandia

Clash of the Titans
One hails from a spring in Vergèze in the Gard département of France (sounding quite atas already).
Representing France
The other is made from a herb named Oldenlandia or 百花蛇舌草 (already sounds damn cheena), bottled in Qingdao Laoshan Mineral Water Co. Ltd (confirm cheena).
Representing the People's Republic of China
But Yakki and I, big drinkers of Sparkling Oldenlandia Water, were adamant that besides the price and packaging difference, Perrier and Oldenlandia tasted the same.

So we had to initiate a Challenge.

The Challenge was simple.
Each participant had to keep their eyes shut while we poured 30 ml of each into two identical plastic cups. He/she was to taste each sample
a la wine tasting and then give his/her comments on each.

It was a unanimous decision.
Out of a population size of six, the Perrier was the preferred choice of the common people.
It was gassier and blander, unlike the Oldenlandia which had a slight salty taste.
Expensive Perrier thrashes Cheap Oldenlandia
Yakki cried foul, protesting that I didn't buy the right Oldenlandia water.

On close examination, the less saltier and much gassier Oldenlandia water we usually drank did come from a can, not a bottle.

On even closer examination, this sample was bottled in Qingdao Laoshan Mineral Water Co. Ltd., while the canned version is a product of HSC Singapore.

But the decision was final. It would have been too lame for us to carry out this already lame and random test again, just to prove that Perrier isn't much better than Oldenlandia.

Regardless, we will remain greater fans of Oldenlandia Sparkling Water because:

1) It has more medicinal and nutritious value in it than Perrier; can cast away heatiness (
zhua) within one's body.
2) It can be found in coffee shops and be served with salt at no additional cost.
3) It costs 70 cents per bottle. Perrier costs 3 times as expensive at $2.*

'Nuff said.

*both Cold Storage prices. prices in
atas restaurants or heartland kopitiams might vary.

Hong Kong - W Hotel Kowloon

It was a turbulent flight into Hong Kong, during which we noticed that SIA girls donned uniforms that appeared to show nothing, but in fact showed close to everything. Surely part of a bigger marketing ploy to keep the business people loyal to Singapore Airlines.
Welcome to W Hong Kong!
Checked into W Hotel at the Kowloon area at 12mn. The receptionist was friendly and chatty, but we were more attracted by the hotel's decor. As it was Halloween, W was decorated with spiders, skulls, pumpkins..
W Hotel Lobby
We're on a row in terms of hip accommodations. If Le Meridien in Bangkok was Mad Men-styled, W Hotel was Entourage.
Walkway to Hotel Utopia
The room had a similar feel to that of Le Meridien. The toilets were kinky-ly linked to the bedroom with sliding doors. The tub had a tv, the lights were cosy. It was designed with the intent to keep you in it forever.
Arriving at Room 1718
First to the bathroom
Then to bed

I had to find out W's origins.

Flip flip flip.
W's under the same hotel group as Le Meridien Hotels.

We've become fans for life.

Now we need someone to demolish and rebuild Le Meridien Singapore to help it live up to Le name.

Scott Pilgrim Reignites Our Fire

Xiao Long Bao premiered Scott Pilgrim vs. the World at his home today.

The film, a definite hit with video games geeks and alternative music enthusiasts, is about Scott Pilgrim meeting Ramona the girl of his dreams.

Michael Cera, of Arrested Development and Juno fame, plays Scott Pilgrim who has to fight Ramona's seven "evil exes" to win her.

Both XLB and Yakki raved about the comic book-like scenes, while we all agreed that the soundtrack's better than most of the crap that's on radio these days.

The first 60 minutes of the movie was so good that it would have taken a colossal effort for the movie maker to generate the same amount of excitement and wow we experienced in the following 60. Overall, the film was filled with humour and creativity.
Official Trailer

Really been a while since any film has sparked the boy in us.

The Nintendo video game music reminded us of our 64, Mega Drive and cartridges past, while the music inspired by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and Becks lifted us out of our recent musical slump.

It's time for some Golden Axe and Foo Fighters!

There's Something About Bangkok

The city Bangkok spells shopping, bed supperclub, markets, temples, massage. To me at least.

Some say it's a city that's ranked just behind London as the most travelled destination in the world.

But in recent times, the political turmoil has began to affect the tourism industry in Bangkok.

Strolling down Patpong, a 2 min walk from our Le Meridien accommodation, proved to be easier than before due to the decreased numbers in tourists.

It remains an intriguing tourist hotspot with its cultural and religious makeup embellished by its lively and potentially sleazy nightlife.

We paid a visit to the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok. The Hindu shrine was packed with worshippers and tourists alike.
Erawan Shrine in Bangkok
Moving across the street, we find ourselves in the centre of the violent demonstrations in Bangkok earlier this year.

CentralWorld, the third largest shopping complex in the world, was set on fire by demonstrators.
The fire collapsed one section of the complex, but the rest was re-opened by late Sep with Thais hoping that everything will be ok for now and for the future.
Optimism all round Central World
We had some time in the afternoon to explore the Thai Creative & Design Center (TCDC). The TCDC was having an exhibition on Spirits: Creativities from Beyond with displays focusing on how humans and fear interact.
Boo!
To cut a long story short, it had displays on everything horror and scary in the entertainment industry, etc.
Props back in the day for a scary radio show
Our evening ended at a small river somewhere outside of Bangkok. A Thai friend of ours brought us to this river restaurant for dinner. When a local brings you to eat, it can't go wrong. In fact, it went really right with the tom yam soup, spicy salad, satays, fish, fish and more fish.

There's no single special thing in Bangkok that really attracts us, but we reckon we'll be back in the near future for no reason.

Jambus!
